Moving house – the best bits!
Moving house is well known to be one of the most stressful things you can do, but with a bit of careful planning you can take the drama out of it and make the experience lots of fun. So if you are unsure whether to move and need some encouragement on the road to finding your new home, here’s our guide to the best bits about moving…
Everyone loves looking at houses, so take your time to do some thorough research online prior to moving. Check the types of houses and what prices they go for in the area, as well as local amenities, places of interest, and any other considerations you need to think about e.g. local schools, public transport and road links. The more research you do at this stage, the more likely you are to end up with the home of your dreams in the ideal location and avoid coming unstuck further down the line.
Location, location, location
Once you’ve done your online research, you will probably have a good idea of where you want to buy and what you can afford, so go and explore the place for real – online research saves time but you can’t get a true picture of a place and visualise yourself living there unless you walk around, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy everything your new location has to offer.
Moving house is a fresh start, so it is the perfect time for a really good clear out and de-clutter before you sell. The more you get rid of before a move, the less you have to take with you and unpack at the other end, so take as much as you can to the charity shop and let somebody else enjoy the benefit of your unused items. You will feel a whole lot better knowing that you have helped others while also de-cluttering your current home.
Once you have de-cluttered your home its show time! You will need to present your current house in its best light to secure that all important buyer that will get you on the road to your dream pad. Sprucing up the home doesn’t have to cost you the earth, there are a lot of things you can do for free or at little cost that can make a big difference. A lick of paint in a neutral colour can work wonders, and a few soft furnishings like cushions and throws can make the place feel more welcoming.
Make an offer
Once you have sold your place, you are in a prime position to buy your dream home, so don’t delay, get your offer in fast to avoid missing out in an overcrowded marketplace. There is nothing like the feeling of having your offer accepted and knowing your dream home will soon be yours!
Plan your move
Once your offer has been accepted it is countdown time. This can be a fun or stressful time, depending on how you approach it. Planning is the key to ensuring moving day goes smoothly, so prepare a plan of what needs to happen and don’t leave everything to the last minute. Include everything from moving your stuff to cancelling the milk and utilities, and redirecting the mail. Setting yourself a task each day and ticking it off the list can give you a great sense of achievement and keep the stress levels under control. A useful checklist of what to do when moving home can be found here.
Make moving fun
If you have children, you can make moving home fun for them and get them involved by enlisting their help with packing. They can help pack non-breakable items in boxes and write or draw pictures on them so you will remember what’s inside when you come to unpack.
Moving home is a great excuse to take a break from work. Booking time off work to move house is essential so make sure you arrange this early, giving yourself plenty of time to enjoy your new place and get settled in once you have moved.
Man with a van…
Removal services can vary from the VIP service, which does it all for you including packing and unpacking, to DIY self-drive van hire. If you can afford it, it’s probably a good idea to get as much help as possible to make light work of moving house and avoid arriving at your new place frazzled and stressed out.
You are in – so celebrate!
Once you are in the home of your dreams and have unloaded the van, you will all be tired and won’t want to start cooking, so either get the number of a good takeaway on speed dial in your phone or if you are really organised, you could cook something beforehand and freeze it to bring along with you. Don’t forget to put the champagne in a cool box to enjoy on your arrival as well, as you will want to really celebrate finally arriving at your dream home!
